Case ID: AIC24-020
Magdalena Alejandra Gaete Sepulveda
Theme: Entrepreneurship (conventional and social)
This study explored the purpose and vision of Alexey Mavrin, the founder of the network of care homes “Opeka.” Mavrin established “Opeka” not for profit, but to solve a social problem—creating a place where elderly people could enjoy life and have fun, regardless of their age. His model emphasized high standards of quality, safety, and aesthetics, such as using unbreakable plates and setting tables meticulously, to foster a comfortable and pleasant atmosphere for the residents. The “Opeka” model was from the begining human-centered, focusing on the needs and desires of elderly people. Mavrin aimed to address key issues of traditional nursing homes by eliminating unpleasant aspects that made visitors and residents feel comfortable. Establishing these care homes was seen as a long-term social impact investment. Mavrin’s approach was to create an environment where current employees and their children might one day find themselves, ensuring that the care provided to the elderly set a standard for the future. This study highlighted how “Opeka” was transforming elder care in Russia, addressing both immediate needs and future societal shifts.

Theme: Healthcare Management/Mechanics
Many people, for some reasons including innate malformations, diseases or accidents, are lost from one to two phalanges resulting in a lot of negative effects on them. However, very few individuals have access to motion-supporting products because of the lack of knowledge about technologies, high cost and low water resistance. This paper proposes a solution to assist disabled people in recovering the basic functions of their disabled fingers; thereby enabling them to engage in daily activities more conveniently as well as contributing meaningful values to society. With some computer design software, the prosthetic fingers that operate based on the mechanical force of the remaining phalanx were created. This product can replace the basic functions of the lost finger joints such as holding, turning and pressing. Therefore, the prosthetic fingers have enormous potentiality to become a motion-supporting device for people with finger disabilities and lay the foundation of other supporting technologies.
