The FOODI MSc programme is developed under the framework of Erasmus+ Capacity Building for Higher Education- MSc Food Processing and Innovation (project number: 598987).  The programme includes both technical (engineering, science, nutrition, health) and business (entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial, design thinking, business strategy) aspects. Essences of innovation are embedded across all courses and the capstone project-MIDAS.

In UTM, the co-owner of MSc FOODI that synergizes with AHIBS is the School of Chemical and Energy Engineering (UTM SCEE).  It resides within the umbrella of UTM Engineering Faculty.

Program Learning Outcome

At the end of the program, students will be able to : 

  • Apply knowledge critically and integratively to manage and resolve problems or issues in food processing innovation towards enhancing the food industry to produce quality, safe, sustainable, and healthy food.
  • Critically evaluate and apply innovative technologies for positive disruption and development of food industry.
  • Demonstrate high level of practical and technical skills in solving food processing innovation problems.
  • Collaborate in learning with community, other groups and networks in various fields and disciplines related to food processing innovation.
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement and effectively communicate original research in interdisciplinary areas of food processing innovation.
  • Implement standard and innovative analysis methods including various digital technologies, appropriate statistical software to monitor risks and hazards as well as improve food quality.
  • Apply mathematical and statistical methods to analyze and evaluate qualitative, quantitative, and graphical data for food processing innovation.
  • Demonstrate leadership, professionalism and management skills as well as take full responsibility for the individual effort and teamwork in food industry research and innovation.
  • Demonstrate skills, self-development, responsibility, and principles of lifelong learning in their academic and career development.
  • Analyze key economic and strategic issues regarding food markets and consumer preferences, conduct internal entrepreneurial interventions, establish effective marketing plans for the food industry.
  • Demonstrate adherence to a professional legal code of practice and code of good ethics in managing the food industry.

Organization Behavior and Development

Code: UBSE 1123

Pre-Requisite Course(s): None

Synopsis:

The Techno-Entrepreneurship course is designed for students interested in learning about how to start and manage technology-based high-impact ventures. This course brings together both the traditional in- class learning and practical experience and the interaction with the entrepreneurs and other related industry players. It introduces the strategies to assess the potential of a new business concept and thus improve the success of high-impact ventures. It offers significant, fascinating and stimulating experiences through a variety of innovative teaching and learning techniques. This course utilizes the case studies on technology-based ventures to show challenges of creating technological ventures including the financial and human resources facets. For this purpose, pedagogical methods including sharing sessions by successful entrepreneurs and problem-based learning based on real business scenarios are applied to foster technological-based entrepreneurial behaviour and action.

Business Ethics, Responsibility and Sustainability

Synopsis:

Business plays a significant role in societal and environmental well-being. Private and public organizations are no longer responsible to shareholders and those inside the organizations, but to external parties including consumers, politicians, regulators, communities and ordinary citizens. To fulfill the conflicting needs of these stakeholders, business leaders and managers often encounter complex situations which require them to make difficult decisions whereby the lines between right and wrong are blurry. This course aims to provide students the fundamental knowledge about the role of organizations in a society and to develop their skills to sustainably manage organizations that integrate legal, ethical, economic, environmental, and social dimensions into their decision-making. The course intends to develop responsible managers who have high integrity, professionalism and interpersonal skills. The course will also teach strategies on how managers can promote responsible conducts in their companies. The course objectives will be achieved through various teaching and learning methods specifically through critical examination of case studies involving ethical issues and dilemmas on complex and controversial business problems. This course is integrative in nature built upon the understanding and reflection of the main disciplines covered in the core courses in the MBA program.

Admission Requirements
  1. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree with honors in related fields (i.e. Business & Economics, Science & Technology and Engineering) of study from any institution of higher learning whether in or outside the country recognized by the University Senate.
  2. Candidates must obtain a CGPA / CGPA of at least 2.50. For candidates with CGPA / CGPA less than 2.50 and at least 2.00, work experience of at least five (5) years will be taken into account.
  3. Students from non-science background are eligible to join the program after completing a bridging course (i.e. Introduction to Food Science and Technology) with a status of “Hadir Lulus” which is to be completed before starting the program.
  4. English Language Requirements for international students applying for the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Postgraduate program must have a TOEFL (iBT) certificate with a score of 60 and over, IELTS with Band 6.0 and above, have an ELS Certified Intensive English Program (CIEP) with Level 108, or CEFR Test Result (ie Cambridge English Qualifications (CEQ) – B2 First, C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency Score of 169 and over, PTE Academic with a score of 59 and over, or Malaysian University Entrance Test (MUET) with Band 4 and over.
  5. Meanwhile, students who do not meet these requirements, can take the ELS Certified Intensive English Program (CIEP) course to improve their level of English proficiency at the Language Academy, UTM or CIEP at any ELS Language Center in Malaysia. After the student completes and passes the course and obtains the IELTS Band 6.0 certificate or ELS English certificate (score 108), the student has met the English language requirements and can be accepted to study at UTM.
  6. Prospective Malaysian citizens who have an APEL T-7 certificate can be considered for admission purposes.
