On 23 April 2019, community engagement went an extra mile when Critical & Creative Thinking (Section 16) students of AHIBS had the opportunity to serve Rumah Barkat Anak-anak Yatim Johor, located in the heart of JB. The program is lead by Sarawana Rau A/L Tharam Raju, assisted by a strong team. Prior to the visit, all 31 students were committed in raising fund by organizing charity sale. Additionally, they also managed to pool a sum of cash donations.
Upon arriving at Rumah Barkat, the group were warmly welcomed by Puan Hajah Hendon Abdullah (Supervisor), Tuan Haji Mohd Nasir bin Abd Malek (Chair of Hostel & Lanscape Decoration) and Cik Siti Noraisyah (Admiministratie Officer). All profits from the charity sale and donations such cash and clothes were handed over to Rumah Barkat by Dr Noriza Mohd Jamal, Director of Accounting and Finance, AHIBS. Students also donated several pots of beautiful flower plants which made the ceremony extra meaningful. Students continued the program with ‘gotong-royong’ activity at Rumah Barkat, cleaning the main hall and its Excellent Center. Students also had a meet-and-greet session with the orphans before ending the day’s program.
Overall, this entire program was aimed to inculcate critical thinking and creativity, building confidence, motivation and instil resilience among students while ensuring the community benefits from their efforts to help the less fortunates.
